“Data Products”, “Data as a Product, “Data Product Management”

There are many discussion and many arguments about the difference between “Data Products”, “Data as a Product, “Data Product Management” etc.

As data professionals we love to reuse the same term by giving it many different definitions and then arguing semantics.

Which is quite funny given how often we laugh abut the “business” lack of ability to clearly define what a Customer is.

Hell we can’t even agree what a “Semantic Model” is.

I am a great fan of having teams agree one definition for a thing, even if half the team disagree. Without a shared language teams have no chance of automating their Information Factories.

And if we cant agree on definitions then we should add words in front of those words. “Customer” becomes “Active Customer” becomes “Marketing Active Customer”.

As I write the GreenBook on the AgileData Guide to Information Product Canvas, I am surprised how long I am spending on defining and refining terms. These are terms I have taught and coached for many years, terms I thought I had nailed until I put them in writing.

So when I read the Dummies Guide to Data Products co-authored by Sanjeev Mohan, Guy Adams and Justin Mullen I was surprisingly impressed.

It is well written, the definitions are some of the clearest I have read, the book covers the semantics / areas it needs to cover and it just flows.

I have found I am now copying and pasting snippets of the book when replying to people in LinkedIn and the various data slack channels.

You can grab a free copy of the book from the DataOps.live site.
